What is Art Therapy?

The Theory Behind Art Therapy

Art, in all its forms, is an ancient method of expressing thoughts and feelings. Art therapy is an historically and scientifically proven process for the easing of tension, anxiety, depression, or inner turmoil. Art therapy can also be a means for exploring personal growth and self-discovery.

Through guided sessions, participants will use a variety of art supplies (provided) to create and experience release and renewal.

You do not have to be an artist to participate in art therapy. Art therapy is not an art class. The end product is not the objective.  It is the process of the experience that matters. Artistic expression is individual and the interpretation of a client’s experience is meant to be insightful and personal. Our our therapy sessions take place in Jasper, Indiana.

The Goal of Art Therapy

Drawing on the creative process, Lucy facilitates experiences that foster deeper awareness and personal insight, often providing a pathway of renewal toward feeling positive, refreshed, and inspired.

What is Guided Imagery?

Guided imagery is a simple relaxation technique where Lucy will lead the participant through thought provoking scenarios where they can imagine and create peaceful and positive outcomes.

What to expect:

  • Lucy will lead the session through guided imagery while describing each step of the process.

  • She will hold space for time to be creative.

  • Although quiet conversation is encouraged, it is important for each participant to be able to concentrate on the thoughts and feelings they are experiencing.

  • Lucy’s main focus is to provide an environment is that it is open and supportive. This allows for freedom of expression and processing emotions..

  • There will be opportunity for reflection at the end of each session. It is entirely up to the participant if they wish to share any insights or thoughts of their experience.  Again, this is a nonjudgmental, open environment.

  • All materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably and bring a water bottle.

And Finally, the Disclaimer

As mentioned, these sessions are not art classes, nor are they intended for confidential disclosure, diagnosis, or treatment.

That being said, you do not need to be an artist to enjoy art therapy. Anyone can play with color and texture. With a little guidance, anyone can tap into their creativity to express and release their feelings.
